Wet belts keep the top and bottom parts of the modern vehicle engine in sync; they are different to conventional cambelts (AKA timing belts) in that they function within the actual engine oil which poses its own particular maintenance and replacement issues.

A wet belt is more prone to deterioration than a typical cambelt or timing chain because of exposure to heat, engine oil and other environmental elements. The integrity of the belt can eventually be compromised by this deterioration, resulting in failure and seriously jeopardising the longevity and performance of the engine. Signs that your wet belt might need replacing

• You can hear scraping or screeching sounds coming from the engine

• The oil pressure sensor light has come on in the dashboard which could be caused by a blocked pick-up
